    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     brianday captured these images from 2009 through 2012. He explains that he snapped many of these images while he was out on photographic projects, although he did follow some engine companies on runs as well. 'Many of my childhood friends have worked as Detroit firefighters over the years, and I've always been impressed with the dignity firefighters display in spite of an often negative perception in the city, as well as quite perilous working conditions,' he says.
