Chan Chan, Peru
This photo shows some animals carved into adobe walls at Chan Chan, which is just north of the oceanside city of Trujillo, Peru.
Chan Chan is the largest adobe city in the world, was built around AD 850 and covers about 28 square km. At its height, Chan Chan is thought to have housed an estimated 30,000 inhabitants and contained a large wealth of gold, silver and ceramics. Chan Chan was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986.
