    Waldo Canyon Fire Air Operations

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Just after the mandatory evacuation was ordered, docfrance documented officials working to contain the Waldo Canyon fire that was encroaching on his Colorado Springs residential community on June 26. docfrance, a colonel in the military, says this was the second worst day of his life, the first being the day he was in the Pentagon when it was attacked on September 11. Luckily, his house was one of the few in the Mountain Shadows community that didn't go up in flames. "The hillside just exploded," he says. "I really believed that we weren't going to see the house again."

Pictures taken on Tuesday 26 June before the fire exploded down the ridgeline into my neighborhood destroying the homes of almost 350 families. Most of these shots are taken looking up towards the ridge between Williams and Queens Canyons and are taken from the Garden of the Gods Overlook on Mesa Rd in Colorado Springs
