    American Sings in Afghanistan

Last month a red-bearded folk singer from Virginia was sent to Afghanistan by the U.S. State Dept. He and his band, accompanied by Afghan musicians, played American folk music in front of an Afghan audience in a building built by Alexander the Great.
The reaction was astounding and made headlines all over the country. The State Dept. spokesman said the band had done more for American diplomacy there than all the money they had spent building roads and power plants.
The singer is Peyton Tochterman, a former student of mine who came to me for advice about how to tell his story. He tells it just fine on his own. He has photos and videos of the trip and would be a great interview. This seems to me like a human interest story with enormous possibilities--about the power of music to communicate when other methods have failed.
