Timpanogos Cave Hike Turns into Fire Evacuation

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     While on a hike with her husband and two children on the Timpanogos Cave Trail, RBG123 says they were shocked, amazed and puzzled by the size of the smoke plumes. "When we started the hike, which is 1/12 miles to the top of Mt. Timpanogos, there was no indication of fire. As we were descending, approximately 2 1/2 later, we noticed clouds of smoke in the neighboring canyon," she says. "Towards the bottom of the trail, we were met by park officials who told us to get in our car and exit west of the canyon. It was very sad to see the beautiful canyon in flames."

American Fork, UT - Late Tuesday afternoon, a construction crew working in Alpine, Utah sparked a wildfire that quickly spread in the tinder box dry foothills near American Fork. The fire spread up the nearby canyons. Hikers and campers in American Fork canyon witnessed the billowing smoke before Forest Service personnel began evacuation efforts.

These photos were taken at the Timpanogos Cave National Monument trail as hikers from Arizona exited the cave and made their way back to the trailhead, where they were immediately directed out of the canyon.
