Demonstration Against Increasing Rents and Gentrification in Kreuzberg, Berlin

From Markku Rainer Peltonen for CNN iReport

The borough of Kreuzberg in Berlin is internationally known for its multicultural ambience with large numbers of Turkish immigrants and their descendants.

Because of increasing rents and simultaneously sinking wages many families cannot pay their rents any longer.

For several weeks, organised by KOTTI Tenants´ Society of Kottbuser Tor in Kreuzberg, inhabitants have been demonstrating against this development. They occupied a part of the area around Kottbuser Tor where the protesters have built a cabin.

Two weeks ago police moved in to end this occupacion and tried to forcefully drive out the protesters.

Last weekend about 600 demonstrators marched from Kottbuser Tor through the borough of Kreuzberg.

Many of the protesters were women and Turkish immigrants or their descendants who have never before taken part in rallies.

The demonstrators said that they will resist their ousting from Kreuzberg where they have lived almost or all their life, they are determined to stay.
