Activists demolish wall blocking street in downtown Cairo

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     arasquare posted this video of activists pulling down barricades near Cairo's Interior Ministry on Tuesday fter local residents complained. The barricades had been erected following clashes between protesters and security forces, but "residents and shops in the area were affected as people couldn't reach their homes or shops easily," he explained. "Activists, along with some of residents, decided to demolish one of the walls and open the street." The blocks are clearly heavy - people can be heard chanting in unison as they struggle to pull them down with ropes.

Dozens of Egyptian activists and residents of downtown Cairo organized a rally on Tuesday, July 11, to demolish one of the barricades blocking the streets in the area around the ministry of interior in downtown, Cairo. This the second time activists decide to demolish one of barricades after they successfully removed one in Kasr Al Ainy street last March, covered in this iReport: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-768997 . Several barricades were built in the area following different clashes that took place between security forces and protesters. These barricades affected the residents and shops in the area. Residents can't reach their homes easily and customers can't reach the shops in the area easily too. The barricade consists of concrete blocks, each weighing about a ton. Protesters used ropes in tearing down the barricade. They also chanted against military rule.
