    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     tscottc captured this stunning photo of a lightening strike from his porch in Burnsville, NC. "My parents, who recently retired, built a house next to us. When storms come up, we usually get together on the porch and just watch," he says. Adding that his neighbors also often come to watch the storms with them. "Many of the storms never get close to us, but we can watch them for hours on end in relative safety. It always leaves me awestruck when you are actually able to permanently capture something that happens in the blink of an eye."

    Our family has been blessed with a spectacular home site. From our porch we watch these awe-inspiring, albeit dangerous, thunderstorms develop from all over. This particular storm, as beautiful as is was, brought 4-6 inches of rain in less than an hour to the town of Millingport, North Carolina, some 20 miles to our north, on May 15, 2012. While we sit and enjoy the lightning and thunder from a distance, we still balance it with the thought of the devastation these storms often bring to the families subject to their wrath.
