    Opening Night of the Monsoon Season.

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     It's officially monsoon season in the southwestern United States, and APizm of Phoenix, Arizona, wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to photograph the first one to hit the Valley this summer. "The thunder and lighting were cracking and booming in all four directions over my head and over the entire Phoenix area," he says. "There was a break in the rain so I knew I had to get a shot fast." He took this photo from the rooftop deck of a Scottsdale hotel on July 12.

    From the extreme heat comes the massive monsoons and the first one of the season did not disappoint.
