Taxes and Social Justice
- Jareen, CNN iReport producer
Though I’m not an American, I decided to join this debate because I think this issue is all about “social justice”. Social justice is an issue that has to be thoroughly discussed not only in the United States, but in all throughout the free world as well. Social justice is based on the principles of securing human rights and equality before the law and involves a greater degree of economic egalitarianism through progressive taxation, profit-sharing and income redistribution These policies aim to achieve what developmental economists refer to as ‘more equality of opportunity’ than may currently exist in certain democratic countries. Unlike socialism or communism, the main objective of an advocate of social justice is not ‘absolute equality in income’ but to see to it that all members of the society would have ‘equal opportunities’ and similar privileges in their respective quests to gain full life, decency, liberty, property and happiness.
The wealthy class should pay bigger and more taxes than the labor sector and the middle class. Such is social justice! Such principle should not only happen in the United States, but in every democratic country as well. In a democracy, no single group should be allowed to dominate and manipulate all the other sectors and classes within the society. Also, the government in a democratic republic should punish all tax-evaders! Tax-evasion is a big crime, hence all tax-evaders, whether rich or poor, should be prosecuted and penalized for violating the law. It’s also important that there is transparency in the government when it comes to the utilization of the revenues that came from tax-collections. All collected taxes should go to worthy projects that would benefit the citizenry. The government should ensure that the revenues gained from tax-collections would go to projects that would really benefit the whole nation.
