UN observers investigating Syria's reported mass killing and vicious massacres have said they found signs of a heavy assault that targeted specific homes of regime opponents.
The observers' statement was the first outsiders' look in the village of Tremseh, where activists say 220 peaple were killed by government troops.
The US team said that it found pools of blood and blood splatters in several homes in Tremseh, along with bullet casings. It said the attack "appeared targeted at specific groups and houses, mainly of army defectors and activists".
The UN confirmed an attack took place using artillery, mortars and small arms. The UN said that observers stationed nearby witnessed government tanks and helicopters attacking Tremseh.
Reports said hundreds buried in neighboring villages or burned beyond recognition. Syrian activists said hundreds of residents remain unaccounted for, and locals believe bodies remained in nearby fields or were thrown into the Orontes River.
The Tremseh violence appeared to be one of the bloodiest events in the now 16-month uprising against President Bashar Assad, in which activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed.
In Syria, the brutal regime of Bashar Assad is testing the proposition that repression works. The massacre of civilians in Houla is only the latest example of what appears to be a strategy of making no concessions and using maximum force.
So far, Assad's strategy has worked. Kofi Annan's mission, which appears to be based on the idea that Assad will negotiate his own departure, seems utterly doomed. The U.S., the Western world, indeed the civilized world, need to overthrow Assad regime by using military action.
