    Aurora Borealis over Iowa

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     moonpeep says at three in the morning on July 15 he went out with his camera to capture the Aurora Borealis hanging over Iowa City, Iowa. He describes photographing the event as a game well worth the wait. 'The aurora borealis is a rather surreal and unique event to experience. The dance shimmers, fades and pulses. The best views usual last a few minutes in what is known as a sub-storm of activity. They are often less colorful to then naked eye than to the camera,' he says. His first photo was selected as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for July 17, 2012!
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

Learning that we'd recently been impacted by a significant solar flare, I headed out to the countryside of rural Iowa in the wee hours of the morning to see if the flare produced any visible Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights) activity. Sure enough, it did.

I'm calling these "Aurora on the cob."
