5OTH ANNIVERSARY DINNER OF AUSTRALIAN INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM
Organised by the Republic of (South) Vietnam Armed Forces Association of Queensland, a special dinner on June 23rd, 2012 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Australian involvement in the Vietnam War attracted nearly 350 guests including Queensland Senator Ron Boswell, Mrs. Teresa Gambaro (Federal MP for Brisbane), Mrs. Tarnya Smith (State MP for Mt. Ommaney), Councillor Milton Dick, Leader of Opposition, Mr. John Mickel (former Speaker of Qld Parliament), Mr. Tony Ralph and Executive members of Legacy Brisbane, Mr. Alan Worthington, President and members of RSL Centenary, Board members of Radio 4EB were present at religious leaders and members of Vietnamese groups and community.
The guest of honour and keynote speaker is The Hon. Mr. Tim Fischer, AC, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.
In his welcoming speech, Mr. Phung Huynh, President of RVNAF Assoc/Qld , said the idea of the function was for the Vietnamese community in Australia to express their gratitude to the Armed Forces, Government and people of Australia who had come to help South Vietnam 50 years ago in the fight against the Communist forces from the North.
He would like to pay particular tribute to 521 Australian soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice over there for the ideals of Freedom and Independence.
In his address, Mr. Fischer recollected the time when he and his fellow ANZAC diggers served in Vietnam when “ … We did our best and worked with many good South Vietnamese soldiers, especially in Phuoc Tuy Province. I take this opportunity to repeat so many gave their very best and indeed, for a period, peace and stability was obtained in parts of SVN to the east of Saigon. On the ground there was real achievement, mixed with a good deal of dust and mud at times.”
The most memorable moment of the evening was when 5 widows whose husbands lost their lives in Vietnam were presented with the Rolls of Honour as a gesture to say that the men’s sacrifices are never forgotten.
A cheque of $6,270 which was all the proceeds raised from the event was then presented by Mr. Phung Huynh to Mr. Tony Ralph of Legacy Brisbane.
With the buffet dinner served by the Lions Richlands club and the music presented by local Vietnamese artists, all guests had a very enjoyable evening.
