    Heat and droughts strike U.S.

    Finally Some Rain

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     pmarkgraff says since June 1, south-central Wisconsin has had little rainfall. July 18 was the first day of actual rainfall for his area, and he says it has been virtually 48 days without rain. Because of the limited rainfall, 'many local farmers were preparing to take major losses on their corn and soybeans,' he says. Wisconsin's Governor, Scott Walker, expanded the drought emergency for 72 counties across the state. 'Many corn farmers are being encouraged to go ahead and harvest their corn right now… This is going to mean bad things for an economy that is so heavily dependent upon corn for everything from food and beverages to ethanol to plastics and more,' he says. He says when rain finally did come it was covered heavily by local media. He says the storm took down some trees and power lines, and brought on heavy wind and rain. 'The wind was blowing the rain so hard it was coming down sideways and sheeting off the roofs and onto driveways. It lasted maybe half an hour, calmed down for a bit and started right back up later in the night,' he says.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

After seven weeks of severe drought, south-central Wisconsin finally got some rain. And boy did we get some rain. Quite severe indeed.
