    Nighttime beliefs and beyond…

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ichalhoub says Bekaakafra, Lebanon, is a largely Christian community. When he was capturing photographs of the religious ceremony, which is situated in the northern Lebanon mountains, people were participating in a procession that was ascending toward the village. The procession transformed into a forty minute walk, and when people finally reached the village they when to the local church where the priest was offering blessings. While photographing the villagers he says he could see their passion in their faith. 'Even in 2012, religious beliefs still motivate great numbers of people,' he says.

Bekaakafra – Lebanon. In the highest village in north Lebanon Mountains, the memorial of Saint Charbel keeps being revived yearly. The Saint was born in this village and lived there before he moved to Annaya in Mount Lebanon area. A night procession on Saturday July 14 went all the way up from the highway of Becharreh to Bekaakafra taking about 40 minutes to reach the old house of Saint Charbel, now changed to a church. People came from everywhere in Lebanon. Some even came from abroad to participate. They choose this period of the year which fits in with their vacation and enables them pray for their preferred Saint. There were great numbers of believers inside as well as outside the church and all over the streets of the village. As there were not enough places left, a priest used the only available chair outside the church for religious confession. In addition, many adolescents and young adults just went there to meet with the people they love! Photos taken on July 14, 2012.
