Gun control debate a waste of time

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     omekongo says the reason why politicians are not addressing the issue of gun control in light of the recent Colorado shootings is because the National Rifle Association, otherwise known as the NRA, is too powerful. 'There is still this fear that Obama is going to come take guns from people based on his comments during the election,' he says. He suspects that politicians fear taking a stance on guns because it might challenge the concept of American liberty to bear arms.

But he feels guns will always be a part of life. 'We have learned to depend on them. Just look at our movies. We are a violence-crazed society,' he says. Although not a gun owner himself, he has had an internal debate about purchasing a firearm to protect his family. 'But I decided that I will not. I am anti-gun,' he says. 'I don't want to add to the climate of hostility in America... I hope I've made the right choice,' he says.

For a safer America, he says the country needs to consider stricter gun control and more thorough background checks. 'You can't buy two bottles of Claritin without a prescription, but buying six thousand rounds of ammo at Wal-mart? How does that make sense?' he asks.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

Until we the people force our politicians to make real changes with gun control, this is just going to be another wasted debate to allow people to posture and pretend they care about victims of gun violence. Guns are simply getting out of control.
