    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter Russell Solomon of Houstan, Texas, took these pictures of the people and places he encountered on a trip to Kazakhstan in the summer of 2006. He visited the cities of Shymkent and Turkestan and wanted to capture as many of his experiences on film as possible to show his family back home. “I wanted to capture everyday life as well as ancient sites of importance,” he says. “This was one of the most amazing trips I've ever taken!”

    I visited Kazakhstan with my sister and father to meet my brother-in-law's family in Shymkent, Kazakhstan in 2006. It was one of the most memorable trips of my entire life even though the trip was less than a week. We ate Kazakh food, heard and participated in Kazakh music, and visited an enormous Islamic mausoleum in Turkestan. The Kazakhs were some of the warmest and hospitable people I have encountered. I learned a song on the Kazakh dombra (lute) from my sister's father-in-law and uploaded to YouTube. The video has gotten over 70,000 hits and was featured on Kazakh TV of westerners embracing Kazakh culture.
