Wildfires Strike the scenic Niobrara River valley of Nebraska

On Thursday, lightning ignited a wildfire in Nebraska's Niobrara River valley. Since that time, several more fires have ignited leaving volunteer firefighters exhausted and stretched thin. This area of North Central Nebraska is sparsely populated and is used primarily as pastureland for cattle. However, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful spots in Nebraska. The Niobrara River is a recreation area used for tubing, boating and canoeing. Area communites have banded together, providing food, water, medical items and other materials to firefighters and displaced residents.
