    Tour de Turtles 2012

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     KWceleste is a volunteer with Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC). She captured video of Pearl, a female loggerhead turtle, entering back into the ocean. Pearl had nested on the local beach, in Vero Beach, Florida, just the evening prior. After nesting, Pearl was secured with a satellite transmitter by the STC so they can monitor her migration.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

Pearl the loggerhead sea turtle gives the camera a close-up view as she passes by en route to the sea. Pearl is joined in the video by David Godfrey [Executive Director of the Sea Turtle Conservancy], who was gracious enough to flip the camera back upright after Pearl gave it quite a nudge!

Pearl is one of over a dozen sea turtles participating in the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s 5th annual Tour de Turtles event. Sea turtles in various locations are fitted with transmitters, and in an effort to promote awareness about sea turtle conservation, “race” to swim a predetermined distance. Pearl was released on 07/28/2012 behind the Disney Vero Beach Resort.

The migration of all sea turtles participating in Tour de Turtles can be tracked at www.tourdeturtles.com. More information on Sea Turtle Conservancy [STC] can be found at www.conserveturtles.org.

I have been volunteering with STC for a few years, and my 8-year-old daughter is a member of their AdvoKids program, which promotes sea turtle conservation in the younger generation. STC’s conservation efforts are second to none, and I am thrilled to be involved with such a worthwhile organization.
