This iReport is part of an assignment:
Gun ownership in America
Yes my family owns firearms
- dsashin, CNN iReport producer
I am appalled that your writer would state "In the land of the Second Amendment, nobody will take your guns away. But if you love your children, you should get rid of them voluntarily."
If you love your children, you will take each one and teach them how to handle a real firearm, show them how to safely work with it and yes, teach them how to properly shoot it.
Too many children today are only exposed to the weapons and fantasy of the numerous games available. Never being exposed to a real weapon by someone who loves them, does not allow them to learn what an improperly handled weapon can do.
As a family, we have begun teaching our son firearm safety. My wife and I go to the range with him and fire our own weapons. Yes I know.., a 11 year old who has his own firearms and a mother who allows it.
Maybe if more families worked towards how to safely handle firearms, we would have less firearm accidents.
Yes when handled improperly, firearms are dangerous, but it is our responsibility as parents to teach and be responsible for our children.
BTW, I am a Connecticut born,- Democratic liberal living in Illinois... who owns (more than one) and teaches my son how to own, respect and shoot firearms.
I believe in the second amendment whose real purpose, was to ensure that the government never became more powerful than the citizens of the U.S.
Maybe that is something you could explore.... the true reasoning behind the 2A.
