    Britain Going to Pot..tery

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     With the world focused on British Olympic Games for the next few weeks this is a great "Hook or Peg" for a story on the way British Pottery is making a comeback using traditions that go back several hundred years. I had a chance to sit down and try my hand at some pottery in one of the best pottery facilities in the world at Wedgwood. I was amazed at the longevity of the people working there. The lady doing the appliques had been doing it for over 40 years and that was a pretty common story. Although I had fun I was advised to keep my day job and that they would keep my application on file for up to 6 months at which time I could re-apply. Me thinks they were just being nice to a man that obviously has a much skill lacking in the Pottery department.

Who hasn't watched an episode of "Antiques Roadshow" and wondered if that old blue vase from Grandma is worth anything?

In 1765, Josiah Wedgwood created a new pottery company that developed a unique satin finished strikingly blue form of earthenware which impressed the then British Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who gave permission to call it "Queen's Ware"; it was a smash hit across europe

At the time people were discovering the history of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Wedgwood took advantage of that fascination by copying ancient pottery patterns and motifs. Certainly among his most popular styles was his development of the distinct blue Jasperware. This alone took over 3,000 samples to create!

Interesting Fact: Josiah Darwin was also related by marriage to Charles Darwin, which no doubt contributed greatly to his future success.
