    Olympics Venues in Greece:1896 & 2004

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter meelah101 captured these images of stadiums and venues from past Olympics held in Greece - the 2004 Olympics and the 1896 games, the first of the modern Olympic era. "I was inspired to share these photos with CNN for the readers to appreciate Olympics then and now," she says. It is also a chance, she says, to examine how the architecture of the venues has evolved to reflect the era and the culture and traditions of the host country. Our iReporter is also thrilled to be watching the 2012 Olympics in London. "This significant and exciting event which occurs every four years is always something to look forward to, as it is the meeting place of the greats in sports and those aspiring to be great," she observes.

As the world watches the 2012 Olympics I think it is worthwhile to revisit where it all started- Greece. Two magnificent venues still stand proud today as the games of the London Olympics enfold.

The Panathenaic stadium, more commonly known as Kallimarmaro, meaning "beautiful marble', was built in the 4th century BC to host the Panathenaic games. Panathenaic games were a set of games held every four years in Athens, Ancient Greece. It was restored with fine Pentelic marbles to host the first modern Olympics in 1896. In the 2004 Olympics it hosted the final circuit of the marathon and archery.(First 4 photos)

The main attraction of the 2004 Olympics was the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. The existing multi-stadium was expanded and renovated to host the opening and closing ceremonies, gymnastics, basketball, swimming, water polo and cycling.
