Olympics Venues in Greece:1896 & 2004
- sarahbrowngb, CNN iReport producer
As the world watches the 2012 Olympics I think it is worthwhile to revisit where it all started- Greece. Two magnificent venues still stand proud today as the games of the London Olympics enfold.
The Panathenaic stadium, more commonly known as Kallimarmaro, meaning "beautiful marble', was built in the 4th century BC to host the Panathenaic games. Panathenaic games were a set of games held every four years in Athens, Ancient Greece. It was restored with fine Pentelic marbles to host the first modern Olympics in 1896. In the 2004 Olympics it hosted the final circuit of the marathon and archery.(First 4 photos)
The main attraction of the 2004 Olympics was the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. The existing multi-stadium was expanded and renovated to host the opening and closing ceremonies, gymnastics, basketball, swimming, water polo and cycling.
