    Visiting the Pinery Indian Cemetery

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     DaElmersBack of Iron Mountain, Michigan, was invited to participate in a Native American pow-wow held in honor of United States veterans. "They are a very proud people who honor all veterans, living or dead," he says. After attending the ceremony and camping overnight at the tribal campgrounds, DaElmersBack visited the Pinery Indian Cemetery where fallen veteran Robert Voakes was buried. "I was just in awe to be honest," he says. "It was beautiful and educating."

    After attending the Powwow in Baraga and camping over-night, we wanted to visit the Pinery Indian Cemetery where Fallen Soldier Pfc Robert Voakes was buried in after being KIA last year. There was much to be learned, we were lucky to have a friend with us that was Native American himself and wanted to teach us more.

     

    The houses you see over the graves are called "Spirit Houses" - They are for people to put things to help them on their final journey. Many years ago a fire destroyed many of the spirit houses, some were rebuilt while others were left. There were many unmarked graves, but we were reassured that these Native American knew exactly who was buried there and when, even if we didn't know.

     

    Each of the graves represent the person that once was.. People put things on the head stones or in the spirit houses that the fallen enjoyed while alive.

     

    While there we found a fungus/mushroom growing that we have never seen before, very beautiful.. Well worth stopping to see.
