    Drinking Green and "Carbon Negative"

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     beetraveler visited Greenbar Collective, in Los Angeles, California. Greenbar Collective is the city’s only distillery, and produces the world's largest collection of organic spirits. She had the opportunity to interview Litty and Melkon, the couple who owns the distillery. 'It is so cute that their spirit making business actually blossomed out his wanting to please his fiancé, wanting to make her more pleasant spirits to drink on social occasions,' she says.

She says she is not typically a fan of spirits, and finds them harsh in taste. But the organic spirits at Greenbar Collective that use whole ingredients taste better, she adds. 'I sampled a couple spirits at Greenbar... It doesn't have the harsh edge that many traditional processed spirits have,' she says. These spirits can be used to make a variety of different cocktails.

She says she was fascinated to learn that the distillery was able to discover a way to make their drinks "carbon negative," which reflects the carbon footprint one has on the environment. 'It is the idea that by consuming one of these products instead of a less consciously produced product, one is supporting a business that makes conscious environmental decisions while also giving back to the environment. And that, I think, is a great thing,' she says.

LA may have a reputation as having other priorities. However, it is more green than you may imagine it. All around, it is really embracing the spirit of going organic. So much so that Greenbar Collective, LA's only distillery, produces the world's largest collection of organic spirits...that also happen to be "carbon negative"....

During a short stopover in LA last month, I stopped by to chat with Greenbar Collective's founders as they settled into its new home in downtown Los Angeles. Until now, LA hasn't had a distillery since before the prohibition.

Since they began producing organic spirits four years ago, Founders and  Spiritmakers Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew (a husband-and-wife  team) have grown Greenbar Collective's portfolio to include organic  vodkas, organic gin, organic rums, other organic liqueurs, organic  bitters, organic tequila and the list keeps growing.

They say that they didn't start out making organic spirits (just ones with whole rather than processed ingredients), but after  experimenting with all of the organic produce available in the LA area, they  converted to completely organic after discovering that "organic tastes better."

Why is the world's largest organic spirit maker in LA of all places? And what on earth does it mean to be "carbon negative"? You'll have to watch the video for the full story on that and to learn more about the making of Greenbar Collective's impressive collection.
