    Travel snapshots: Otherworldly landscapes

    Ampato Volcano, Peru

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     While visiting Peru in late 2010, JohnVogel was on a minibus traveling between the city of Arequipa and the Colca Canyon when he saw this odd landscape. 'Looking at the photo now, it almost looks like two photos combined into one photo. That's how great I find the contrast between the dark rocky foreground and the bright blue sky with the snow capped volcano. Put simply, I love how wonderfully "otherworldly" this scene is! I've never seen a view like it since.'
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

This bleak "otherworldly landscape" shows Peru's snow covered Ampato Volcano photographed at about 4800 metres (15,750 feet) on the road from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon. The Ampato Volcano is about 6388 metres (20,950 feet) in height. Unusual textures to the rocky terrain in the foreground are in marked contrast to the vivid blue sky and snow capped volcano.  The air is VERY thin at this altitude!
