Islamic Mosque burned down in Joplin

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Roadster1927 says he was standing in front on his home at 7:00 a.m. on August 6, when he noticed police lights flashing in the distance near the direction of a local mosque that sits on the edge of Joplin, Missouri. When he saw the smoke in the air, his first thought was arson. 'That building was targeted before by someone who tried to set fire to it,' he recalls. 'When I saw the smoke, I figured it was arson again.'

From where he stood, he says he could tell there was nothing left of the brick building. He went over to the site, which is a quarter of a mile away from his home. There were still fire fighters on the scene as well as people who looked like they were members of the mosque.

He stayed at the scene for a few minutes, watching the smoke trail from the completely burned down mosque. 'It's just sad,' he says. He says he does not know if the area has a large Muslim community, but he says it seemed to him that the mosque had an active community and participation.

Carl Junction Fire Department received an emergency phone call at 3:32 in the morning about the fire at the mosque, which is also an Islamic center, according the fire chief Bill Dunn. Due to the expansiveness of the fire, responders were unable to save the building. It was a combination of the wooden infrastructure as well as the lack of a direct water source, according to Dunn. ‘It was a complete loss,’ he says. Dunn says the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but says the ATF is currently investigating the situation. He also added that the mosque was targeted by an arsonist on July 4 of this year.

The fire department was called around 3:30am this morning to a  fire at the Islamic Mosque located in Joplin, MO. When they arrived, the  West side of the building was engulfed, and from there it quickly  spread, the building is a total loss. There was an earlier attempt of  arson of the same mosque on July 4th 2012, but was quickly extinguished,  that person is still at large, the cameras on the building videotaped  that attempt, and shows a good picture of the alleged arsonist.
