    Mars in Morocco

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     alexopensky runs a boutique tour company and visited southern Morocco in February 2012. He said it's one of those places on the globe that he thinks of as one of Earth's nooks and crannies ... 'As if the planet was a large living room, with furniture and areas that people regularly use, but far off in one of its corners, behind a large couch and side table with old coffee table books on it, underneath a rug that hasn't been moved for years, is a tiny pathway you had no idea was there,' he said. 'It was definitely other-worldly.'

    This photo was taken in southeastern Morocco (near Tata, an outpost close to the Algerian borer) earlier this year while I was scouting out new places to take travelers to with my tour business.  The landscape is unlike any I have ever seen (perhaps the closest was in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile).  Barren, rugged, fascinating geological formations, and all shades of red and brown..... It's Mars in Morocco, I thought!
