    Sikh community speaks out

    Palatine, IL Temple Vigil

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     When hearing the news about the tragic shooting in Wisconsin, sonnygill says it really hit home. And not just in terms of being close to his home in Chicago, but the home that he shares with all Sikh Americans. "I personally went to the vigil to support our community and family of Sikhs who are going through this hard time. And to show that their strength is still here, regardless of these senseless acts," he says. "The biggest thing that stuck out to me was that we received prayers and heard from various community members from different backgrounds and religions. That truly showed how united we are as Americans and that one person's act will not deter us from continuing down our path of welcoming peace."
    - Anika3, CNN iReport producer

Evening candlelight vigil at the Palatine Gurudwara (temple) in Illinois. Hundreds congregated with prayers given by people of various religions - showing unity, respect, and strength.

My wife and I chose to attend the vigil to support our community and family of Sikhs, who are going through an amazingly hard time, and to show that our strength is still here, regardless of these senseless acts.

The event hit home. Not in terms of vicinity to our residence in Chicago, but the home that we share with all Sikh Americans. It hurt my wife and I to see such an act could (still) be administered in a place of worship, where we practice peace and acceptance of all people, no matter their background. It amazes me to see that such ignorance is still prevalent in this day and age but shows us that continued education is needed to make positives shifts in our culture.

Hundreds attended the vigil, which truly showed how united we are as Sikhs and that one person's acts will not deter us from continuing down our positive path.
