    Travel snapshots: Otherworldly landscapes

Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon)

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     TimBenson29 shot this photo at sunset in Chile's Atacama Desert, while on vacation visiting his girlfriend. 'It certainly reminded me of Mars with the red coloring of the stone and the vast isolation and absence of life. Very moving, very serene, it felt as though we had departed the world.' He said the Mars rover landing was 'an incredible feat for scientists,' but 'it also is worth remembering how many astonishing sights we have here on Earth.'
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

The desolation and untainted valley of the Atacama region in Northern Chile is part of a region that sees some of the scarcest rainfall in the world, with parts of the desert currently in a 400 year drought.
