    Tilting at Windmills

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     With "Don Quixote" being one of her favorite books and always having had a strong case of wanderlust, AllisonGee setted off on her own adventure to the town of Consuegra in Spain, where windmills like the ones described in "Don Quixote" can be found. "The first sight of the windmill was glorious. I'd been traveling alone with very limited Spanish skills and no ability to tell if I was even in the right place, so the realization that I was actually in Consuegra was a total relief," she says. "These windmills and this town were from the 12th century, and no one feels the need to point out just how old things are. History is just a natural part of life, it's not something Europeans separate themselves from." Her first image was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for September 28, 2012!

    Consuegra, Spain is a small town located about two hours south of Madrid by bus. A steep hike to the top of the hill leads to the remains of Consuegra Castle and a handful of windmills believed to have inspired the Cervantes classic "Don Quixote."

     

    Speaking very little Spanish made getting to Consuegra a challenge, especally in the off season, as there is only one bus from Madrid. Traveling alone, I hopped on every bus at the bus station asking "Es correcto?" until I found the right bus. Consuegra is a bit of a ghost town, and standing alone on top of the Cerro Calderico ridge, over looking La Mancha, was incredibly magical and moving experience. The wind gusts easily top 50 mph and several knocked me to my feet.
