Midwest Drought Disaster, an Aerial Perspective

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     mgerringer says he used an AR Drone 2.0 to captured this video to show a better perspective of how the drought is affecting the Midwest in Terre Haute, IN. "I have never seen anything like it. The corn crops should have a vibrant green look, not yellow-brown. And the soy bean fields are usually very full and lush, but are sparse and browning," he says. "Not only are corn crops withering and lakes drying up, but many trees are beginning to die. Our county, along with most others in Indiana have been declared a federal drought disaster area. Farmers are facing big losses as drought stricken fields have withered, low lake levels and stream levels have ruled out most boating, kayaking, or water skiing activities, and the drought has certainly taken its toll on wildlife."
    - Anika3, CNN iReport producer

These video clips provide a dramatic glimpse of the worsening drought conditions in the Midwest. Many lakes throughout the Midwest have gone dry, corn crops have withered, and now even the hardy soy bean plants are beginning to wither. The lake in this video clip, located in Terre Haute, Indiana, was completely dry by the end of June, leaving behind scores of dead fish. The corn/soybean fields observed in this video are just a glimpse of the crop disaster that is unfolding across the Midwest. A federal drought disaster has been declared in 72 of Indiana's 92 counties and in 98 of Illinois' 102 counties. Many farmers, realizing their loss, have begun clearing wasted crops and tilling their drought stricken fields. With no relief in sight, conditions are expected to worsen over the next month.

The footage above was captured using a quadricopter equipped with an HD video camera. The quadricopter is called an AR Drone 2.0 and is made by Parrot.
