Travel snapshots: Otherworldly landscapes |
Like a UFO landing...

I not believed my eyes either! It looked like as an alien craft from a distant Galaxy would just landed in midst of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. I took these photos in this breathtaking Arctic settlement in October 2011. These photos show the period of the long lasting Polar twilight when the sun just hits the top of the mountains and the village is already disguised in darkness even in noon. It is a magical sight as the mountains light up as they would have their very own bright light source. It looks like as nature would draw a very strait and sharp dividing line between light and darkness as well. This is the time before the long Polar nights return to Longyearbyen, Svalbard. (Spitsbergen), which is situated 78° 14' N over the Arctic Circle. It is the most fantastic settlement I ever visited. It is one of the Earth’s northernmost towns. Svalbard still has fully operational coal mines. The first picture shows the towers of the mines, The wild beauty of Svalbard (Spitsbergen) untouched nature is absolutely breathtaking. To visit Svalbard it is an adventure itself, but to experience this most magnificent and magical place is a greatest event of a life time. You will meet not just the kindest people, but also the majestic animals of the Arctic, like Polar bears, Arctic foxes, Walruses, Humpback Whales, Beluga whales, Blue Whales, (the largest mammals on Earth). just name a few.
