    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     With dreamlike colors stretching across as far as the eye can see, Kalalau123 captured this mesmerizing photo that looks like it belongs on some otherworldly landscape. "The Polynesian markers are from another world thousands of years ago. It's haunting, mystical, and telling of another time, place and way of life," he says. "There were no compasses, only stars and deep oceans. The Polynesians settled the whole of the South Pacific this way."

    The great Polynesian navigational markers sit on the north west shore of Kona in a remote, secluded area on the weat coast to prevent vandalism.
    These markers pointed the way to the Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa and Vanuatu. With mathematical precision I might add. Today, they are within meters of original maps as long as one lines up the stars with the intended destination and know how to navigate with them. Pro physicists have plotted their courses with GPS and have found them accurate to the hundreds of meters.
