    The Bats of Kolovai

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     On her way back from a snorkel outing, RomaniaScene says she spotted these fruit bats by the roadside and stopped to take photographs. "They are part of the Bat Sanctuary in the village of Kolovai here in the Kingdom of Tonga. I thought that their "song" was light and kind of cheery, not as imposing as the bat screeching, which is not so pleasant," she says. "I didn't get too close, but I'd like to get a closer look next time for sure. I was amazed to see how large and kind of endearing they were. They are a very important aspect to the Tongan culture and folklore."
    - Anika3, CNN iReport producer

In the tiny village of Kolovai, here on Tongatapu Island in the Kingdom of Tonga, you can get serenaded by hundreds of flying foxes (fruit bats) which hang in the Casuarina trees there. They are protected by the royal family of the Kingdom of Tonga who are the only people allowed to hunt them. Their faces resemble foxes and they are said to have been given by a Samoan princess to a Tongan prince.
