Altenmedingen Posaunenchor Wraps Up Des Moines Area Tour With State Fair Concert

The Altenmedingen Posaunenchor wrapped up its concert series of the Des Moines area at the Iowa State Fair on the afternoon of August 12.
The ensemble, which played a variety of music including marches, spirituals and polkas is from Altenmedingen, Germany, a city located near Hamburg and Hannover. This concert was preceded by a concert by the Greater Des Moines Community Band.
The Altenmedingen Posaunenchor is comprised of tubas, trombones, baritone horns and trumpets. Twenty-five of the ensemble’s sixty members made the trip to the Des Moines area. Over half of the ensemble’s members are under the age of 25. The ensemble is celebrating its centennial this year.
Other scheduled appearances for the band included the Edgewater Senior Community Center in West Des Moines, Faith Lutheran Church in Clive and farmer’s markets in West Des Moines and Waukee as well as at the Adel Sweet Corn Festival. The ensemble's visit to the Des Moines area was sponsored by the Polka Club of Iowa, Central Chapter
According to information from the ensemble and the Polka Club of Iowa, Central Chapter, the Altenmedingen Posaunenchor performs at birthday celebrations, at hospitals and retirement centers, and around the Altenmedingen area. The ensemble has also done youth exchanges in Poland, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Argentina. The ensemble performs about 90 times annually, Kramer said at the Windsor Heights concert.
