U.S. Embassy Statement Condemning Suicide Bombing Targeting Innocent Afghan Civilians
The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the suicide bombings that occurred yesterday in Zaranj in Western Nimroz province, Dasht-e Archi in Kunduz province, and in Badakhshan, killing at least 29 innocent civilians and injuring at least 100 people. According to reports, most of those killed in Zaranj were purchasing food in preparation for the evening Iftar for the holy month of Ramazan. In Kunduz, this senseless act occurred in a bazaar and targeted fellow Muslims who were finishing their evening prayers before breaking their fast. By targeting innocent civilians with multiple and coordinated attacks, the terrorists have once again demonstrated their utter disregard for the safety and security of their fellow Afghans, and the sanctity of the holy month of Ramazan. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to those affected by today's bombings and their families. We will continue to work with the Afghan people and government for a stable, prosperous, and democratic Afghanistan that no longer has to suffer from terrorism.
