    Further than it looks

    With my husband, Jason, and daughter both working on summer school, we opted to stay within driving distance when everyone needed a mid-summer break. Jason's only request was that he get to swim in a nice river. So, we trekked 6 hours south to Salem, OR from northwestern Washington and spent one day swimming in the Three Pools of the Santiam River. We couldn't have picked a better weekend to cool off and hang out with the locals, as the temperatures rose to over 100º. Jason still needed a wetsuit, though, because the river was numbingly cold.
