Akin - A Case in Judgment & Common Sense
- nsaidi, CNN iReport producer
I am so glad today I am a Hoosier and not a citizen of the great State of Missouri. The state has come under the national spotlight after Congressman Todd Akin, who is the Republican candidate facing incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in November, made remarks about "legitimate rape" and a rape victim's body preventing pregnancy due to rape.
While many are seeing this as a discussion on abortion, to me it is rather a question of judgment and common sense. The Congressman, who is standing his ground and vowing to stay in the race, is to me a failure on 2 very important concerns that voters in the Show Me State should be focusing.
Show me good judgment - Akin in his remarks fails on this.
Show me common sense - Akin fails on this as well.
While true, as some have pointed out, the issue of abortion is unlikely to be up for a vote in the Senate if Akin should win and that he will be voting on other issues, that brings in to question whether Missourians want such a person casting those other votes in the Senate on their behalf. Akin's judgment and common sense are in question.
If Akin is truly concerned about his constituents and his party, Akin should do the right thing and bow out of the race. Akin should allow his constituents and his party the ability to have a candidate with better judgment and more common sense to be on the ballot.
Missourians, do you honestly want this person casting important votes on the economy, on jobs, on the national debt, on defense, on healthcare for you?
I would urge my fellow citizens in the state to the west of the Cornfield, to Show Me that you have better judgment and more common sense than displayed over the weekend by Congressman Akin.
From the Cornfield, it is the lack of judgment and common sense that has landed the nation in the straits it is now facing. Do we need more bad judgment and less common sense in the upper chamber of Congress?
What do you think of this story?
