    A Blue Moon For Neil Armstrong

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     jeffreyroot captured a video and photographs of the blue moon on August 31 in Provo, Utah, as he thought about late astronaut Neil Armstrong. 'People don't realize how dangerous going to the moon was with the equipment they used. I wanted to honor their bravery,' he said.

    The term "blue moon" refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. When the iReporter was shooting the moon, he thought about how lonely it looked up there. 'I feel like we stopped dreaming,' he said. 'The general public does not understand how important the space program is in their daily lives. They switch on their smart phones to use GPS and they forget about the satellites that guide those phones.'

    To honor the death of Neil Armstrong I made it a goal tonight to pull my telescope out of the garage and take a photo of the "Blue Moon." I got lucky enough to catch a break in the clouds and as I stood there looking at the moon I imagined the Apollo 11 landing sight, still left just as it was the day they left back in 1969, dust kicked up by the LEM but foot prints and science experiments still intact, waiting for a future visitor to observe the site. We have not retuned to the moon since 1972 but it still captures the interest of a few who can get away from looking down at their smart phones and lap top screens and look up and wonder at the night sky. For those in the city the moon may be the only celestial object visible. Lets not shut it out.
