'Lawless' A True Story From Prohibition America
This film is directed by John Hillcoat (“The Proposition,” “The Road”) and we were hoping for a decent picture. What you get is a violent gangster movie, set in 1930's Prohibition Virginia. The distributor of this show is The Weinstein Company.
It's based on a true story, the picture follows the exploits of the Bondurant brothers’ moonshine business as they illegally try to sell alcohol to the locals — and to hide from the corrupt cops, as well as the Chicago Mob.
The film is not for the kids, but if you like movies like 'The Godfather', 'Casino', and 'Goodfellas', this might be the show for you. Oh, and there are two topless scenes as well...and gun lovers will enjoy the 'Tommy Guns'.
The all-star cast performs nicely...Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Jessica Chastain round out the gangsters and the girlfriend.
Now this is a great period piece. The small towns and fields are beautifully shot, the cars are dead on, and we loved the tin signs, furniture and the homes of the era. It did feel like you were right there in 30's America...
Grade:B
