Your favorite building |
A Historic Fortress In Hungary
- Anika3, CNN iReport producer
My favorite building is maybe the so unique brick fortress in Gyula which is located in South East Hungary, near to the town I grew up in Bekes District. I also studied in the Highscool in Gyula and I enjoyed so much in winters to ice scate after school on the frozen little lake a front of this historical building which was bult in the 15th Century. The castle was occupied by the Turkish for 130 years between 1566 and 1695.. They are still visiable the huge iron "bullets" in the brick walls. Historically it is the only brick castle in Central Europe. Inside the castle there is an open air theatre in summer. Also they are often organize jazz festivals. The castle has a great historical exhibition as well which displayes lots of interresting artifacts of Hungary's past stormy Centuries and the Museum showcases beautifuly the life in the Middle Age. The fortress has its own dungeon as well. It is remarkable how wonderful this historical building is preserved. When I visit it now, I not just reminiscence about my youth but also I enjoy the serenity of its surrounding. Near by it is a great spa with warm thermal wells which are enriched with minerals. The water has a unique dark green color. In my youth they not were many public transportation aviable, so I usually took the old rusty bike of my Father or I rode the 8 miles from my home on horseback to school. These long rides on the wide open Hungarian steppe landscape are my most cherished memories. Thank You; PuakeaJutka
