BREAKING NEWS: OFFENSIVE BILLBOARD COMING DOWN!
Another saying also comes to mind by Oscar Wilde:
"The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."
Spy has got people talking, that's for sure. The North County Times said that the "Happy to sit on your face" sign in giant letters is causing some smiles, even as it raises some eyebrows." Some people ARE NOT amused. Channel 10 News quoted Encinitas resident Kathleen Anderson's reaction: "Oh my God, that's quite a sexual kind of comment to make in big bold letters like that." Another shocked citizen was very surprised at what she saw (and read.) "I thought that I read it wrong," said Moonlight Hair Design owner Sarita Mihaly. "I thought that it was a joke."
Nontraditional and hipster advertising seems to be de rigueur from Spy sunglasses of Carlsbad . This "face" message is first in a series leading up to the 2013 unveiling of a new product called the Spy Happy Lens.
Spy says that the patent-pending Happy Lens technology lets in blue light from the sun, increasing serotonin, making the wearer happier.
Spy marketing director Devon Howard said feedback for the company has been "overwhelmingly positive.
We wanted to build up a teaser to the new lens technology we have coming out in the spring," he said. "We're trying to have some fun and create some awareness that this is coming."
That very well may be. However, Channel 10 News just reported "Breaking News," that Spy has received several complaints about the unseemliness of the sign. The company agreed to take down the "Sitting on your Face" billboard tomorrow, Sept. 6.
Here's another cliche to consider: All's Well That Ends Well."
