Bill Clinton Was Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton was vintage Bill Clinton tonight as he formally nominated President Barack Obama to carry the torch for yet another 4 years for the Democratic National Party. That included the fact that as customary, Bill was not shortwinded...but long in the tooth as always for about 48 minutes.
But you got to admit, no one knows how to reach out and touch the common folk better than the man from Hope. Tonight Clinton was classic Clinton.
Some of the lines I liked from the speech were:
"I want to nominate a man who is cool on the outside, but burns for America on the inside."
"I want Barack Obama to stay the President of the United States. I proudly nominate Barack Obama to be our standardbearer."
"We believe we are all in this together is a better philosophy than you're on your own."
"What works in the real world is cooperation."
"He even appointed Hillary," Clinton noted when talking of how the President had reached out to the "opposition" to work in and with his adminstration.
Turning to a comment made by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Clinton quipped, "Senator, I hate to break it to you, but we're gonna keep the President on the job."
Republicans in Tampa had this to say last week Clinton charged, "We left you a total mess. You didn't clean it up fast enough. So fire him and put us back in."
"Are we better off than when he took office?"...the audience sreamed, "Yeah!"
"If you renew the President's contract, you will feel it," Clinton offered soothing words for those not yet feeling the economy has turned around.
Looking toward the future, Clinton pointed out, "The old economy is not coming back. We have to build a new economy and train the people to fill those jobs that are coming."
Yes, Bill Clinton was Bill Clinton. Love him or hate him, the man knows how to play to the base of the Democratic Party.
From the Cornfield, is it any wonder CNN was asking today whether people would like to have Bill run again for yet another term in the White House?
