    Unusual Buildings In NYC

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     mcintron says she loves the architectural details of old buildings in New York City. "There's a gothic look to many of them and the little balconies come as a surprise when you look up," she says. "To me, the buildings have a lot more personality and character than the modern, glass enclosed boxes that are the fashion today. To me these buildings represent the history of New York like almost nothing else can. If only they could talk!"

    When people think of New York City, they generally think high-rise, modern skyscrapers. Very few people think of the older, pre-war buildings that are such an important part of this city's history. They were built when the pace of life was much slower and archeticture depended as much on the skill of the craftsman as the draftsman who designed it. And, although it's true that the Empire State building falls into this category, it is a landmark that is mostly known for it's height, not so much for it's art deco architecture.

    Last month, as I walked around the city and my Upper West Side neighborhood, I decided to shoot photos that showed the details of these buildings. The first two photos are in midtown, at West 57th Street.

    The others are residential buildings and were shot on one block on West 110th Street just off Broadway. These buildings are typical of the Upper West and East Sides and I love them, as they truly represent New York City to me.
