    Annapurna (South) Avalanche

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     On a six week adventure through Nepal and Bhutan by himself, TheNYBureau captured this avalanche from a safe spot near Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. "It was a magically clear and still morning. About an hour after sunrise, there were rumbles and sounds emanating from the surrounding mountains as the powerful, altitude-bolstered sun began to bake the ice and snow," he says. "One of the loudest bangs came from just behind me. I turned around and captured this image of the avalanche as it thundered down the flank of the mountain." This shot was chosen as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for November 13, 2012.

    On the morning of June 6th, 2012 I captured this small avalanche as it thundered down Annapurna South. Our spot was just above Annapurna Base Camp (proper) and the sound was enormous. A magnificent start to the day!
