    More from Mahariffic

    Still Undecided, But More Aware

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Mahariffic says although she did not watch much of the DNC coverage so was surprised by how much the DNC stood out to her. ' I watched more of the Republican Convention trying to find some hope that the GOP had a vision and plan for how to pull us out of the proverbial deep, dry well. The Democrats seemed to have tried harder, somehow, in their pitch for support. Neither side appeared to take votes for granted, though the Republicans appeared cockier, I think,' she said. She says despite watching the conventions she stills feels undecided over who to vote for in the upcoming elections. She says she wants to wait and hear the presidential debates before she makes a decision.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

After watching both political conventions, I at least know more of what I am, what I want, and what is possible under the right leadership. I have defined my political identity as that of a conservative Democrat. Think of a conservative Democrat a bit right of Bill Clinton but polar opposite of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
Conservative Democrats defined most southerners prior to the exodus to the Republican Party during the early 1980s. I don’t have much respect for those who left the party to extreme liberals. After years of strained agendas, the Democrat Party has a chance to redefine itself as a balanced moderating force that causes government to assist and guide society and not rule over it.
The Republicans would have our rights determined by corporate boards of directors. We see what happens when corporations are free of meaningful oversight. They become like bad, spoiled brats that must be spanked on occasion. Of course, not all businesses are like that, and much of government operates like thick slurry in a 2-inch pipe.
Of all the speeches from both conventions, I enjoyed Bill Clinton’s the most. I liked Ann Romney’s second. Between Obama and Romney, I liked Romney’s acceptance speech better. Obama’s seemed rather melancholy dotted with irritation and ire.
Still, I like Obama’s stated philosophy, and I agree that he is courageous and determined. However, I believe that if he really wanted to help the middle class, he would free up domestic oil and gas production in public lands barred from development. I would like to see serious use of clean coal technologies. Clean coal technology is expensive, but it does exist. This country has endless supplies of coal and gas, and enough oil to help us transition to alternative fossil and renewable fuels in the coming years. In my opinion, President Obama’s restriction on developing our energy resources has been his greatest failure, because so much growth and prosperity could grow from that.
Do I yet know for which presidential candidate I will vote? No.
Meanwhile, since I blame Congress for most of the country’s mess and lack of progress, I doubt I will vote for my congressman, who is a good man but as a stalwart Republican he can’t possibly grasp what his constituents need. I also wish I could vote out one of my state’s senators, but that will have to be in another election cycle.
Whoever wins the White House, I pray that equates to a win for the majority of the American people.
