CTU Rally Upbeat
On a whim, I attended the Chicago Teachers Union rally in support of the strike and found that despite the tension of the negotiations, the spirit of the rally was festive and upbeat. I saw no counter-protesters and the attendees were very respectful of the police and security officers who maintained a watch over the 30,000-plus crowd.
Critics argue that the teachers' strike has put students in an unfavorable situation, but the mood at the rally was one of optimism. As one teacher explained, "We are out here for the kids. A few days off of school is a small sacrifice to save our public school system in the long run. I think students and parents will be thankful looking back on this."
