Teachers: Why do you teach? |
Truth and Self Reliance
Currently pursuing his master's degree in order to teach dance education full-time, he says he has always known that going into this field would be difficult. "Each semester I have to answer the very real question, can I afford it anymore?" he says. Adding that he still chooses this path because he believes he can help students feel like they are a valued part of the world. "Children and adolescents are smarter than we give them credit for. If the administration and politicians really took the time to listen to these future leaders, we wouldn’t be in the mess that we are intoday with our educational system."
- Anika3, CNN iReport producer
When I began my journey to become an educator, the first truth I was taught about child development was that language is caught, not taught. Children learn from their environment – what they see, hear, smell, touch, taste and feel. With the proper guidance, who’s to say that they can’t continue learning in this manner? This truth has been taught out of children and parents alike.
Today, many public schools have become holding cells for children to live up to unrealistic standards so that parents can go to work without having to pay for a caretaker. Additionally, educators are being held by the same standards as an accountability measurement of their ability to teach which highlights the depth of how much our administration is out of touch with the realities of the real world classroom.
I teach because I hope that one day I will walk into an empty classroom and not because it’s the weekend, a snow day or holiday, but because my children have learned that they can achieve much more through the power of self reliance than I can ever teach them and as a result of this truth, I have become obsolete.
