Polar Bears Enjoy a Great Year on the Ice
Polar Bears are quite content living out their lives in relative isolation in the frozen north where they earn title as the world's largest carnivore, largely on a diet of seals and the occasional Beluga whale. On this expedition we noticed the bears in a very healthy state meaning they were well fed before comingon to the mainland during their annual walking hibernation. We know this because they were quite heavy and because they arrived about 3 weeks late meaning there was still plenty of food (seals) on the ice floes due to a longer ice melt this year.
