    Demonstrations in Greece, 2

    Workers of the municipalities of Greece held a demonstration infront of the Ministry of Finance at the Syntagma Square this afternoon to protest the planned cuts of up to 30% in municipal budgets this year. According to the Central Union of Greek municipalities, this is on top of the 60% in reduction. Thousands of workers from the different municipalities in Greece joined the protest with a march that started at the Klafthomous Square in downtown Athens.

    With the planned reduction, the local governments will not be able to operate its services such as day care centers for the young and the elderly, medical services and food assistance programs, among others.

    An employee of the municipality of South Suburbs , Hellinikon said that the programs of the schools would also be affected as there would not be enough funds to finance the cultural programs and also its personnel.

    According to her, the banner their group was holding said: No to economic cuts, No to Troka....

    The workers called for a 48-hour strike which will end tomorrow, September 13.
